I have been training no gi jiu jitsu on and off for about 16 years, so my 6 year old daughter has always been intrigued by it. I decided to sign her up in the kids class ages 4-6, gi. And she absolutely loves it. The coaches, especially Liz, are great with the kids and are setting them up with a strong foundation of listening and following instructions. I absolutely love the details of this gym as well. You receive follow ups to see how you're feeling after classes and how to videos to help you prepare. I have trained at several bjj academies and Villanova is by far the best place I've come across.  The instruction is top notch and Beto is thoughtful and articulate in his lessons.  It is easy to see how effective Professor Beto's methods are when you see how beautifully his long term student's practice jiu jitsu.  Also, the adults are a great group of people who will help you learn and feel safe (I'm sure the kids classes are the same). I’ve been training here for almost 2 years now, and my 5 year old son has been participating in the age 4-6 classes for almost a year. From the first day Professor Beto and the rest of the Vilanova family has been very welcoming. I can tell he actually cares about his students, fellow professors, and coaches. The BJJ instruction you find here is second to none whether that’s coming directly from Professor Beto or one the other well trained black belts in the academy. They do it because they love the sport and want to share it with the community and it shows. Fantastic home school environment. Professor Liz has a wonderful way of challenging and encouraging kids.

I have been training under Professor Beto since February of 2014 and decided to join after having been a long time fan of the UFC. I had always wanted to do either wrestling or Jiu Jitsu but felt that I had missed my opportunity. Since the first time I walked in and met Professor Beto, and because of the friendliness of him and his students, I have always felt welcomed. This is a friendly , ego-free, bully-free, non-intimidating gym in which you and your children (even as young as 3) can learn realistic self defense. The techniques are presented clearly and in an easy to understand way. Be sure to not mistake the friendliness for incompetence because Professor Beto has proven himself in some of highest level tournaments as a BJJ blackbelt. A true sign of a legitimate instructor is that they are never afraid to roll with their students. He regularly rolls (spars) with his advanced students and it helps make everyone better. A good instructor doesn't just talk the talk but they walk the walk. Finally, Professor Beto and his students have become friends of mine. A true sign of a martial artist is not just how you act on the mat, but off the mat as well.
